The Situation

In light of the ongoing influx of e-mails and phone calls we are receiving here at Khula Dhamma Community (KDC), it is becoming increasingly clear that there is a mounting demand for guidance and support on the path to conscious and ecological living.

While many recognise ecovillage living as an ideal, few of us can conceive of a way to simply disengage from a precariously imbalanced "system" that has progressively drawn us deeper into dependence and, hence, disempowerment. Now more than ever we, at KDC, like so many centres of Earth stewardship and community, feel the urgent need to establish a bridge of practical knowledge and experience that further lights the way to transform the current global society into one that is actually sustainable.

Through relentless economic growth and so-called “development”, we have unwittingly created a fast-paced, highly complex lifestyle that, despite all its luxuries and conveniences, has not only led us further from a fulfilling and peaceful life, but to the very brink of an ecological cataclysm and the extinction of our species.

Consequently we are now at the stage where inflation and petrol prices are spiralling out of control. There are food shortages, power cuts and general social unrest the world over. Prominent figures of the scientific community confirm that if future generations are to have a hope of continuing to live on our magnificent, but severely ailing planet, then nothing less than urgent fundamental changes in human behaviour and social values are imperative. Many of us, however, don’t need science or petrol prices to validate what we already feel aching in our heart and burning in our gut.

Clearly, for the privileged minority not already suffering its effects, we are heading into challenging and turbulent times. The key questions then are: How many more warning sirens do we need before we actually start taking concrete action, and what realistic paths of strategic collective action would, if embarked upon by a critical percentage of humanity, effect a transformative tipping point in the destiny of humankind?

Providentially, as we reach this defining time between opportunity and disaster, many of us are awakening to our inherent gift and responsibility as conscious creators.

At KDC, we feel that the time is now fully ripe to engage in a conscious co-evolution where we purposefully and collectively move towards exploring the ways for global transformation. By exemplifying and promoting the ecovillage movement, it is our intention to initiate and support all efforts towards liberating ourselves from the self-destructive and unsustainable culture of consumerism, isolation and fear; and to assist in the birthing of a New Way of life that embraces community, diversity, and our spiritual potential.

Never before have gathering places- devoted to both humane, sustainable solutions for the ecological crises and the exploration of consciousness- been of such vital importance to human survival and evolution.

“Whether this world will end up as a paradise or a catastrophe will not depend on the design of the cosmic plan but on how many choose to make the climb”
-Carl Johan Calleman (from The Mayan Calendar and the Transformation of Consciousness)
