Visiting & Volunteering

We gladly welcome visitors and volunteers. The distinction is that visitors come with possible interest to join and/or to learn about the community. We generally ask that visitors come for a minimum of three days and contribute R100/day for food and accommodation (alternative arrangements can be made should this contribution be too high).

Those who come as a volunteer or a wwoofer are requested to stay for a minimum of three weeks (max 3 - 4 months) and receive food and accommodation (and inspiration!) in return for about 5 hours of work per day, six days/week. Jobs generally consist of garden work, building, childcare and domestic duties. We try to provide a variety of jobs and in return ask for flexibility of working hours.

Visitors have often kindly requested what they can bring for the community. Thus we invite all visitors to bring a fruit tree or a medicinal plant as an offering to the land for the benefit of all.

Please contact us at least 2 months in advance to confirm there's space.

What to bring:

Smiles and Laughter, Instruments, Sleeping bag, Torch, WORK GLOVES, Shady hat and anything else you can think of or would like to share…

If you are bringing any appliances (cell phone, laptop etc.) please consider investing in a car charger adapter- all our electricity runs off 12V batteries through a car-lighter socket.

PLEASE NOTE: We only use natural/organic soap, shampoo, toothpaste, detergents etc. (eg. colgate "herbal" and "organics" shampoo are made with petro-chemicals)

Unfortunately we cannot accommodate for visitors to bring their dogs.

KD is alcohol-, drug- and meat-free.

Transport:

The nearest city / transport terminal is East London. With sufficient notice we can happily come and pick you up. Preferably avoid arriving on a sunday vis a vis shopping...

By plane: Cheap domestic flights from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban can be booked on www.1time.co.za or sometimes www.flysaa.com

By bus: South Africa has an extensive network for bus travel. Check www.translux.co.za for info and booking.

By car: 35km passed East London on the N2 towards Umtata. Take turn-off direction Haga Haga/ Keimouth on right. After 12km, at St. Anthony's cash ’n carry, turn right- direction Haga Haga . After 6km of dirt road you'll see a sign for Khula Dhamma on the left. It's 2km, through two gates, over the river... drive slowly... up to the house and park there.

Public Transport/ Hitch-Hiking

From the train station in east London it's a 10 min walk to the Oriental Plaza- you can ask anyone. There, go to the taxi rank and get on the taxi to Soto. Costs about R15. Get off at St. Anthony's, next to the turnoff towards Haga Haga. From there you'll have to Hitch-hike towards Haga Haga- very easy. Follow that road for exactly 6 km. Then, on the left, in a dip with lots of eucalyptus trees you'll see a gate with a wooden sign for KD. Walk through the gate for about 2km to the house.

Welcome...
